YWCA Hamilton Women of Distinction Awards
The Power of Women
Now in its 44th year, YWCA Hamilton’s Women of Distinction Awards recognizes the achievements of women trailblazers in the Hamilton community. This prestigious award honours women who have demonstrated leadership, been an agent for change, made an impact, inspired and encouraged other women in Hamilton to take part in shaping the future of their own lives.
Why support women in leadership?
- Because only 4% of CEOs in Canada’s Top 500 companies are women.
- Because for every dollar a man earns, a woman earns 75 cents. If she’s a woman of colour, she will earn 60 cents.
- Because wage discrimination limits choices and restricts the futures of generations to come. It creates barriers for securing child care and limits the potential to put food on the table.
YWCA Hamilton is working to address this leadership gap because – to put it simply – investing in women is an investment in the future of Hamilton.
YWCA Hamilton’s Women of Distinction Awards honour and celebrate trailblazing Hamilton women who have excelled in their fields, and salute outstanding workplaces whose policies and practices promote women’s leadership and equal advancement opportunities.
Join YWCA Hamilton to celebrate the power of women and nominate an outstanding women in your community today.
Walk A Mile In Her Shoes is an annual event that challenges people of all ages, genders and abilities to walk in a pair of women’s high-heeled shoes to raise funds and awareness aimed at ending violence against women and girls. Together, we’ll walk a mile in women’s shoes as a symbolic gesture and in solidarity with survivors of violence.
Since its inception, YWCA Hamilton’s Walk A Mile In Her Shoes has raised over $450,000 to power life-changing and life-saving programming for women and families impacted by violence.
Because half of all women in Canada have experienced at least one form of violence. Girls and young women are eight times more likely to be victims of sexual assault and women and girls are five times more likely to experience sexual violence than males.
Approximately every six days in Canada, a woman is killed by her intimate partner.
All violence is unacceptable and YWCA Hamilton is dedicated to ending violence in all of its forms. As an organization that is for, by and about women, we work to end violence against all women – including individuals who identify as women, regardless of what they were assigned at birth.
Violence against women and girls is the world’s largest human rights violation. Each year in Canada, over 75,000 women and their children flee their homes to escape violence. Annually, over 60,000 Canadian women access emergency shelters, with fifty-one percent bringing along their children.
As a result of violence, women and girls have become the fastest growing segment of the homeless population. All too often, women are forced to choose between a life of violence or facing homelessness.
In Partnership with the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board and the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board, YWCA Hamilton will host the annual Totally Awesome Young Women’s Breakfast on Friday, May 3rd at Liuna Station. This event works to strengthen young women’s voices, celebrate their differences and recognize their accomplishments. Over 500 young women and non-binary youth from across Hamilton come together annually for an empowering and inspirational morning.
The Breakfast is an opportunity for young women across the city to acknowledge their impact. It also provides a safe space for young women and non-binary youth in our community to learn that their lives, goals and contributions are important. The intention is for these youth to be inspired to become leaders in their communities and to increase their sense of confidence and belonging.
