Advocacy and Movement Building
Did you know as a member of YWCA Hamilton you are part of a world-wide movement connecting over 25 million women and girls in 125 countries?
YWCA Hamilton has a long tradition of advocacy in Hamilton that stretches over more than a century! A force to be reckoned with since its inception, YWCA Hamilton accomplished a great deal in the organization’s first year alone. In 1889 a boarding house was established, educational and recreational activities began, and an employment bureau was created.
Since then, YWCA Hamilton has been a strong voice, advocating for the improved status of women locally and through our affiliation with YWCA Canada and the World YWCA. YWCA Hamilton knows that a holistic approach is needed in order to achieve women’s equality. We advance social change daily through our programs, services and supports and advocacy. We tackle social issues related to:
• Ending violence against women
• Affordable, quality child care
• Women’s economic independence
• Women’s entrepreneurial opportunities
• Women’s health and wellness
• Strong and healthy Girls
• Women’s leadership
• International linkages in the YWCA movement
• Hamilton Positive Space Committee
• December 6th Memorial
• International Women’s Day
