SELF Project – Mother’s Matter Centre
YWCA Hamilton has partnered with The Mothers Matter Centre, a not-for-profit, registered charity dedicated to serving socially isolated and low economic status mothers and their families to deliver the Safe Space for an Early Learning Foundation (SELF) Project.
Throughout the pandemic, the Mothers Matter Centre (MMC) and second stage transitional shelters highlighted a gap in programing for pre-school aged children as crucial means of early intervention for children and a means of healing for families as they rebuild their lives after violence.
In response, the Mother’s Matter Centre is working with four second stage transitional shelters across the country, including the YWCA Hamilton, to pilot its curriculum and approach with families who have experienced violence with pre-school children. This pilot project aims to close this gap for women in second stage transitional shelters and increase their confidence and parental agency while supporting them to effectively engage with their children through a high-quality early learning program that prepares them for success in school and life.
YWCA Hamilton is proud to bring this program to mothers and children who call Phoenix Place and our Putman Family YWCA home in December 2022.
