Not simply one of the most successful basketball coaches in Canadian University sports history, Theresa Burns also stands as an exceptional female role model in a male-dominated coaching environment, and a two-time breast cancer survivor whose perseverance has been an inspiration to all of those around her. In her 26th season as the head coach of the McMaster Marauders, Burns reached a new high in her decorated career, by winning her first national championship as a coach and the first in the McMaster program’s history in 2019. Over the course of her three-decade-long coaching career, which began with a four-year stint at Ryerson, Burns has been recognized as the OUA Coach of the Year on three occasions, and was the CIS Coach of the Year in 2008. Patrolling the McMaster sideline for over 500 OUA games, Burns boasts a winning rate of 68 per cent (342-164) in conference play, and is the second longest tenured coach in U SPORTS behind only her former Blues mentor Michele Belanger.
