Many women are silent for years, hiding behind masks of happiness, masks of control, masks of “everything is okay,” while behind their masks, they are struggling with the deep sadness, fear, and pain that comes with abuse.

Unmask the Silence is an art exhibition created by current and past residents and clients of Phoenix Place, YWCA Hamilton’s second stage shelter for women and their children escaping domestic violence. The exhibition features 25 masks, each telling an individual’s story through their own words and artistic expression. This public exhibition honours the stories of resilience, courage, and independence of survivors, while raising awareness of violence against women.
