Step 1: Register 

Walk in solidarity with survivors of violence by registering for Walk a Mile in Her Shoes. Join us as an individual walker or create your own team!

Once registered, you’ll gain access to your personal fundraising page which you can customize and share with your contacts. You’ll also receive  personalized supports and resources to help you reach your fundraising goals.

Gain access to exclusive offers, opportunities to score some pretty sweet prizes and access to our WAM store. You’ll also be directly supporting women and families.

Step 2: Raise funds

Step 3: Get Ready for Walk Week

Our first ever #WAMHamilton Walk Week will kick off on August 12, 2020 and will wrap up on August 19, 2020 with a virtual rally and awards ceremony. During Walk Week, we hope you will:

7. Participate in our exclusive contests and a family friendly scavenger hunt in downtown Hamilton to win our WAM Sweepstakes! If you choose to participate, you’ll be asked to share photos/video of yourself completing contest missions using #WAMHamilton for contest entry. You will receive more information about WAM Walk Week contests following your event registration.

8. Post photos/video from your Walk using #WAMHamilton during Walk Week and YWCA Hamilton will share your posts on our social media channels.

9. Wear red while Walking the Walk – your way – as a symbolic gesture of the strength of survivors of violence. No heels are necessary, we just want you wear red and walk up to 1 mile wherever you like to walk.

10. Join us on August 19, 2020 for our Virtual Rally & Awards Ceremony. Together, we’ll announce the winners of our awards, complete our sweepstakes draw and share the impact of Walk a Mile in Her Shoes. You will receive your invitation to the Virtual Rally & Awards Ceremony following event registration.

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes provides many opportunities to compete for  awards with your team or family! The following awards will be announced at the Virtual Awards Ceremony & Celebration on August 19, 2020:

Learn more about our many Walk Week mini-challenges and how you can gain entries by logging into the Participant Center to access your WAM Walk Week guide. A prize will be presented to the individual walker who has collected the most points/entries in the 2020 WAM Sweepstakes.

Individual walkers who fundraise or donate $600 or more by midnight on August 18, 2020 will be entered to win a Hamilton Community & Business gift basket!

Presented to the individual walker who has fundraised the highest amount of all walkers! In order to be attributed towards your fundraising total, all offline donations (cash and cheques) must be entered online by you as ‘offline donations’ by midnight on Tuesday, August 18 and dropped off to YWCA Hamilton’s 75 MacNab St. South location on or before August 18th.  Contact Malgosia to learn more about your offline donation drop off.

Presented to the team who has fundraiser the highest amount of all registered teams! FAQ’s

A:         Because half of all women in Canada have experienced at least one form of violence. Girls and young women are eight times more likely to be victims of sexual assault and women and girls are five times more likely to experience sexual violence than males. Approximately every 2.5 days in Canada, a woman is killed by her intimate partner and since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, At least 9 women and girls have been murdered in what are believed to be domestic homicides.

Violence against women and girls is the world’s largest human rights violation. Each year in Canada, over 75,000 woman and their children flee their homes to escape violence. Annually, over 60,000 Canadian women access emergency shelters, with fifty-one per cent bringing along their children.

As a result of violence, women and girls have become the fastest growing segment of the homeless population. All too often, women are forced to choose between a life of violence or facing homelessness.

A:        Registration fees to participate are $39 and students walk for free! Once registered, you’ll gain access to your personal fundraising page which you can customize and share with your contacts, and personalized supports and resources to help you reach your fundraising goals.

You’ll also gain access to exclusive offers, opportunities to score some pretty sweet prizes and access to our WAM store. You’ll also be directly supporting women and families.

A:         Your support will change and save lives by providing safe housing and the support that women and children need to escape violence. Learn more about the impact of your support. 

A:         Walk a Mile in Her Shoes is a signature YWCA Hamilton fundraising event that powers life-changing and life-saving programs for women and children. Our fundraising goal is $85,000 and we cannot reach it without your fundraising support.

We hope that you will set a personal fundraising goal and ask your friends, family and colleagues to support you. All pledges and donations of $20 or more will be issued a charitable tax receipt when donor name and address have been provided.

By fundraising, you will also have access to our exclusive grand prizes! Walkers raising $600 or more will be entered into our grand prize giveaway and the top individual and top team fundraisers will also be awarded.

Register to sign up as an individual, as a Team Captain, or to join an existing team. Registration fees to participate are $39 and students walk for free!

A:         Cash or cheque donations are considered “Offline Donations.” Participants must hand in all cash and cheques received with the Walk a Mile pledge form in order to have tax receipts issued to donors and for donations to be counted toward your individual or team fundraising goal. The pledge form can be downloaded from the Participant Center after registration when you login to your account.

Registered participants can enter cash and cheque donations through their personal page so that these offline donations are reflected online in the total raised. Please enter these by August 18th at midnight.

Completed pledge forms with cash and cheque donations may be dropped off to YWCA Hamilton on or before August 18th. To confirm your donation drop off please contact Malgosia. DO NOT MAIL CASH. Donations of $20 or more will be issued a charitable tax receipt.

A:         The number one reason people don’t give is because they are not asked. Involve your friends, family and colleagues in your fundraising and you will reach your goal in no time! Once you register online, please share your participant page to your networks and send emails requesting support. There is also a downloadable pledge form for collecting cash donations and a flyer you can print and share.

Let us help you raise funds and awareness by hosting a virtual presentation on the impact of Walk a Mile with your friends or colleagues. We are happy to discuss creative and fun ways to mobilize your networks and workplaces.

A:         Walkers are encouraged to wear red clothing and any type of shoe to represent the diversity of women and families facing violence. High heels, flats, sandals, boots or running shoes show the variety of women this event aims to support.

As a registered walker, you  get exclusive access the WAM Store to purchase awesome swag to wear during your walk! Every purchase will get us one step closer to reaching our fundraising goal.

Due to social distancing guidelines, YWCA Hamilton will not be providing registered walkers with red high heels this year.

A:         The colour red represents strength, leadership, courage, vigor, determination and willpower. By participating in YWCA Hamilton’s Walk A Mile In Her Shoes, you’re taking a stand against violence against women. By wearing red, you’re walking in solidarity with survivors and sharing a message of strength.

A:         YWCA Hamilton is a registered charity (#11923 6792 RR0001). Donations of $20 or more are eligible for a charitable tax receipt. Please note that tax receipts will not be provided for registration fees. Tax receipts are automatically generated for online donations and will be emailed shortly after the gift has been made. Offline donations and pledge forms will be collected event day and tax receipts will be issued shortly afterwards by mail.
