Now in its 44th year, YWCA Hamilton’s Women of Distinction Awards recognize the achievements of women trailblazers in the Hamilton community.

Who is a Woman of Distinction?

A Woman of Distinction has made a commitment and a significant difference in her community by showing vision, creativity, and initiative. She may have:

  • Been a role model and inspired others through her leadership
  • Broken new ground or old barriers, and been an agent for change
  • Participated actively as a volunteer
  • Made an impact in her chosen field of endeavor
  • Assisted others to be successful in their achievements
  • Inspired and encouraged women to take part in shaping the future of their own lives and their communities
  • Been innovative in the way that she approaches challenges facing women and the wider community

Who is eligible?

To be eligible to receive a YWCA Hamilton Woman of Distinction Award nominees must:

  • Make their contribution in the City of Hamilton
  • Meet the selection criteria above
  • Previous award winners are not eligible
  • Posthumous applications cannot be accepted
  • Members of the current YWCA Hamilton Board, employees of YWCA Hamilton, and current members of the event committee are not eligible to nominate or be nominated

How to Nominate

Thank you for your commitment to advancing women in leadership! By nominating an outstanding woman in the community today, you are also recognizing and supporting the advancement of generations of women to come.

Step 1:

Choose an awards category or categories below and complete an online nomination form or download the PDF version of the nomination form. If you choose the PDF option, make sure to download and save the form before completing your nomination. Nominees may be eligible in multiple categories. Please review the category descriptions below to determine her best fit. Although she may be nominated in more than one category, she may only win one.

If choosing the PDF forms, please note that they are designed to allow you to write directly on the form (note: to sign the document digitally in Adobe Acrobat, use the pencil tool which can be found under Tools, Comments & Markup).

Step 2:

Nomination submissions must consist of the following documents (PDF or DOC format):

  1. Signed and completed nomination form. Please provide only 1 nominator per submission. Only 1 submission will be accepted per nominee.
  2. Nominee profile (maximum of 120 words, approved by the nominee). Following review and editing, profiles will be made available to the media and published in the awards program.
  3. Testimonials of support, from sources other than the nominator (minimum 2, maximum 5).

Step 3:

Submitting your nomination:

Online Submissions: Complete the online nomination form for the category or categories of your choice. Upload all mandatory supporting documents mentioned above in Step 2 in the appropriate spaces. Click submit when complete.

PDF Submissions: To request an offline PDF fillable form, please contact mmarceta@ywcahamilton.org by January 3, 2020.

You will receive an e-mail confirming receipt of your nomination within two business days after submission.

Award Categories

ARTS | CULTURE | DESIGN

This award honours a woman who enriches the community through her commitment to expression, preservation, promotion, and/or support of the visual, literary, multi-media, architectural, cultural heritage, or performing arts. She excels as a creator, but also uses her talents to promote the artistic efforts of others and to broaden community engagement in the arts. She promotes the value of the arts as integral to the life of the community and is responsible for changing the way we perceive this industry.

BUSINESS LEADERSHIP | ENTREPRENEURSHIP

This award honours a woman whose achievements in the corporate sector or as a business owner shows her commitment to excellence in the business world. She has a proven track record of innovation, sustainability, and profitability in her field, leveraging her success to advocate for and to elevate other women in business. She is a professional who challenges and motivates others to break the ceiling. She has demonstrated leadership within her company or among her employees, facilitating change and opportunities whenever possible.

COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP

This award honours a woman who is a visionary trailblazer, a source of strength for her community, and has improved and enriched the lives of others. She is an influential leader through paid work, and/or volunteerism in the private, public, or not-for-profit sector. She may work in the area of public affairs, women’s rights, intercultural relations, social justice, or peace. She has created positive and meaningful social, economic, or political change that will impact people for years to come.

EDUCATION | MENTORSHIP

This award honours a woman who mentors and empowers others by giving them the tools they need to make positive changes in their lives. Her passion for lifelong learning is exhibited through her dedication to mentorship, and motivation to achieve the goals she sets for herself. She serves as an inspiration to other women as she empowers them to do great things. She leverages her own achievements by paving the way for future leaders and motivating others to seek knowledge and opportunities.

HEALTH

This award honours a woman who is committed to building healthy communities by elevating the value of physical, mental, or spiritual well-being of each person she comes across. She demonstrates leadership in health care, athletics, recreation, and/or community programming. She makes a difference in the lives of others by inspiring and empowering them to make positive health related changes, supports the concept of building healthy neighborhoods, and strives to make a difference in the lives of others, especially women.

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT

This award honours a woman who is 55 years or older who has made significant and varied contributions to the community in any of the Women of Distinction award categories (with the exception of Outstanding Workplace and Young Woman of Distinction). She is a role model who has tirelessly contributed to the community in many ways, for many years, as an advocate, volunteer, and/or mentor. She exhibits strength, wisdom, and character that serve as an inspiration to those around her. When nominating for all categories (except Outstanding Workplace and Young Women of Distinction) you may also nominate your nominee for a Lifetime Achievement Award.

SCIENCE | TECHNOLOGY | TRADES

This award honours an exceptional woman who is dedicated to the pursuit of scientific, technological, or industrial advancement. She is a considered an industry trailblazer who could excel in one of many fields, including engineering, applied sciences, social sciences, life sciences, technology, or a skilled trade. She recognizes the importance of elevating women in non-traditional occupations, using her own accomplishments and experiences to lead by example, she is a role model and endeavors to create future opportunities for women in her field.

YOUNG WOMAN OF DISTINCTION (ages 18-25)

This award honours a young woman between the ages of 18-25 who shows leadership at school, in the community, and/or in her workplace. She demonstrates perseverance, innovation, and a keen understanding of community issues. She inspires others to follow her example, and sets the pace for others to walk alongside her. This exceptional young woman is committed to a cause or the pursuit of a personal dream. She is a leader who will continue to inspire us for years to come.

YOUNG TRAILBLAZER (ages 17 and under)

This award honours a young woman under the age of 17 who shows leadership at school, in the community, and/or in her workplace. This exceptional young woman is a leader and inspiration to her generation. She challenges the status quo, understands and addresses community issues and inspires other to do the same.

*Must fall within this age range by December 31, 2019

OUTSTANDING SMALL BUSINESS (1-99 employees)

This award recognizes a business or organization that supports and responds to the diverse needs of its employees, supporting them as they balance the demands and rewards of career, family, and community. This workplace acknowledges the challenges its female employees may face, and proactively supports the success and advancement of women in its workplace. It fosters professional development and mentorship, supports employee volunteerism and community initiatives, and promotes health and wellness among employees.

OUTSTANDING WORKPLACE (100+ employees)

This award recognizes a business or organization that supports and responds to the diverse needs of its employees, supporting them as they balance the demands and rewards of career, family, and community. This workplace acknowledges the challenges its female employees may face, and proactively supports the success and advancement of women in its workplace. It fosters professional development and mentorship, supports employee volunteerism and community initiatives, and promotes health and wellness among employees.
