Today is Earth Day! And at YWCA Hamilton, we’d like to take a moment to highlight how we are able to celebrate the environment in so much of our programming, thanks to the generosity of our community.
Last June, YWCA Hamilton was able to transform unused backyard space at Phoenix Place into a community garden for residents to enjoy, thanks to a generous gift of $4,000 from the Zonta Club of Hamilton 1.
YWCA Hamilton worked with a City of Hamilton horticulturalist who volunteered her expertise to help us build the garden, as well as foster a safe and supportive environment to create a meaningful shared space. The addition of outdoor furniture allowed residents to enjoy time outdoors, including for relaxation and therapeutic purposes.
“Many of us are starting our lives over at Phoenix Place,” read a message from Phoenix place residents. “And it means a lot to have our own garden where we can grow our own vegetables and fresh herbs. Thank you for making it possible, for us and our children, and for everyone who comes after us as well.”
